Description

Winter hunting in Dor-Lomin.
Fingon the Valiant is my favourite character in Tolkien books. I admire his deeds and in itself this character means a lot to me. He is close to me in spirit as none other. This photoshoot was conducted in Moscow this february.

Fingon: Tano :icontanoverya:.

First of all, as I've only read the books, I will use them as my reference for this critique.

The picture has a lovely combination of (also my personally favourite!) colors: white, skyblue and black with hints of warmer and mid-hues of their kind. The smaller details offer also more to look at every time you take your time to gaze at it anew, from the emerald rings to the dry-brown leaves. No wonder why ones eyes get drawn to this picture in particular.

However, compared to the others from the shoot, this picture had the best setting: Not only do the variance in winter colours bring out the depth, but also the angle from which this was taken. The blurried branches in the upper front bring out ones line of sight from the minor details to the character. It also gives the picture more naturality, like a picture that was not too perfectly free of trees. Likewise, by setting the text in the upper left corner it doesn't disturb the photo by taking too much of the focus, slightly making it more transparent as well.

To add on, the cropped angle suits this photo as it focuses on the upper torso and head, which are undeniably the most attractive parts of the cosplay: The makeup have been done well and not too thick or feminine, and Fingons golden braids emphasizes his very distinctive feature. Although there are not many references of his looks to go on, his stance and bodylanguage gives off the kind of grace elves have in their calm but serious ways. It's as if he, looking away slightly to the side and back, is being on his guard. This adds more feeling to the photo itself - it has a story. The only thing that disturbs this feeling slightly is the left arm resting on the knee - had it been more diagonally or the left leg more crooked to the front of his body it would have given more impact as it would tell of movement rather than standstill. It's not to be considered as a mistake, but rather another optional way of having done this pose.

All in all, the costume has been put a lot of effort into - the skills of the photographer brings it alive, and the winter scenery has helped with the final touch...
